THE SET

I knit this hat and scarf set from a big skein of multicolored yarn.  The yarn was in sections of purple, turquoise, blue and gold.  I removed the gold colored section and just worked with the cool tones.  The scarf has very wide stripes of color and the hat has a tweed-y appearance.  Both pieces are soft and warm.  What a nice combo!  Why thank you.  I think so, too.

CHAMELEON

Oddly, the colors in this hat in the picture look blue and peach-y but in reality it is more of a rusty color with a tinge of lavender.  Either way you look at it, the stripes really show up quite vividly. And, it's very soft yarn so the wearer will be happy with the feel of this hat on their head.

LAZY RIVER

Well, isn't this colorful?  Just right for the weather (crisp and sunny) and heavy enough to keep the head warm on a lovely Autumn day.

GRAPE SODA

I like making these striped hats.  They take a bit of planning and a little extra work, but I think they look very nice when they are completed.  This one is extra thick to keep out the cold winter winds.

ON THE GO

Soft and warm and very comfy.  That pretty much describes this purple people pleaser.  Let's go.

LEANING TOWER OF STRIPES

Pink and black stripes neatly in rows plus some tweedy mix thrown in for good measure.  Nice.

PLEASANTLY PURPLE

I like the looks of this predominately purple colored hat with the lilac colored brim trim.  It is knit with double yarns and is so soft to the touch.  I bet someone's ears will like that this winter.

FIRE AND EMBERS

This hat has a super thick band and it will definitely keep somebody's ears warm this winter.  The color combination reminds me of the 1950's when pink and black, worn together, was very popular.  Winter is coming and along with that--cold weather.  Head protection.  Check!  Great colors.  Check!! Check!!

THE OTHER EIGHT

Here are the rest of the hats that I knit during the purple hats for babies campaign. They are all warm and snuggly for the winter months and very soft to the touch.  I hope some little babies enjoy wearing these hats and I hope the color of the hats calls attention to the period of "purple crying" and our need for understanding as this to shall pass.

eight purple hats

I made eight little purple baby hats. Why?  I wanted to support a knitting project that I became aware of recently.  The project involved knitting purple colored hats to be given to newborn babies during the months of November and December.  The purple color is associated with the period of "purple crying" in babies and serves as a reminder for all of us that this period of crying will pass.  Hugs and babies go together.  Show the love!!

MMMMM

mmmmm...how delicious!  The berries and the hat are just right.  The pastel knit hat is thick enough to keep the head warm all Winter and into the Spring.  O.K., now let's eat!

TIPSY

This is a very snuggly warm hat.  I used a solid blue yarn and mixed it with a colorful variegated yarn.  It is double knit at the brim so the ears will stay nice and toasty warm.  Cute, too.

RAINBOW SHERBET

The pastel stripe cuff on this hat has the same the colors and flavors of rainbow sherbet.  This knit hat is sure to keep a little head snuggly warm against a chilly breeze.  Looks delicious, too.

PINKEE

One more picture of a hat caught in a traffic jam.  haha   so funny   The roller brim style hat is knit from some very soft baby pink yarn.  It is snuggly warm and ready to go for the not-to-distant cooler weather.  Just takin' a break until then.

STRETCHED OUT

Ouch!  This is what a knit hat looks like when it is stretched on to a side mirror in order to take a picture of the hat and also include the long line of cars behind it going to a solar eclipse event yesterday.  Nice hat.  Very soft.  Warm.  Black.  Just like the moon covering the sun.  Really black.

TOTAL ECLIPSE

Today is the day--the great American eclipse and I am fortunate to be standing in the path of totality in northeastern Kansas.  This hat is a mix of pale yellow and light blue yarns--the colors of the sky.

SHIP AHOY

This hat is knit from two colors of yarn.  One color of yarn is steel blue and the other yarn is white.  Both yarns are very soft to the touch and some little child will enjoy wearing this hat.  I'm sure of it.

SPARKLING PINK LEMONADE

Now, doesn't this sound refreshing!  Pink lemonade.  mmmmm  With sparkles, too.  How cute.

BLAZING FOREST

This hat is knit from the softest yarn.  It has a silky feel. I knit some brighter colored yarns into the band to give it some color.  My sister named this hat.  I think it fits.

BABBLING BROOK

Cool and refreshing.  That's the color scheme for this hat.  But underneath it all, it's a very warm hat.  Snuggle in and enjoy the sounds of the outdoors.  You might just hear a babbling brook nearby.

chocolate sundae with cherry

There are actually tan and brown yarns in this hat that give it the saucy look and just enough pinky yarns to give it a cherry on top look.  Yummy!!  and warm.

WOODY PINE

This hat seems to "go" with the pine-y woods.  Double thick, double green, extra warm.  Very nice.

TOMATO HEAD

This color of yarn is very bright!  It is an orange-y red color.  How perfect for a cheery looking hat! The yarn is thick enough to keep somebody's head warm.  Throw another log on the fire from that woodpile, please.

HOOVER

Wow!  This hat looks bigger than the house behind it.  I do believe that is the house where President Herbert Hoover was born.  Now, he was a big guy...and this hat is a big hat...hmmm...maybe...

STRIPES AND FLOWERS

Here's a cutie.  This lightweight knit hat is perfect for the cooler Spring months.  It has a little roll brim and a pastel tassel on the top.  Some little child will look very fashionable in this hat.

LINCOLN

This is the Lincoln hat posing in front of the Abraham Lincoln house in Springfield, Illinois.  The hat is made from bits and pieces of yarn.  The hat (and all the yarns used to make it) came from very humble (scrappy) beginnings and became a really useful, wearable piece of wearing apparel.  Good things CAN come from simple beginnings.

LILACS

What a pretty color!  The tweedy knit hat looks so Spring-y.  Very sweet.

BROTHERS

I started out knitting two hats from the same yarn in order to make identical hats for two little boys.  The bigger hat was finished first and when I got to the crown section of the smaller hat I found out I needed to add more yarn for the double layer at the ears.  The smaller hat has a greenish tone to the crown.  You know, just like brothers, some things look the same and other things look a little different.  The boys loved the hats.  Good going.

A NICE HAT

Not sure what to say here.  I like the green and yellow color combo and the four layers of yarn in the ear area will certainly keep those ears warm.  Soft to the touch, too.  Well, I guess that says it all.

BLUE TWEED

This roll brim hat was knit from three yarns--blue, grey and white.  The yarns were rather thin so I knitted them all together as one.  The result is a very soft mid weight hat with a tweedy look.  nice!

SWINGTIME

Pastel colored yarns were knit together to make this lovely hat.  Soft and lightweight.  Spring-y.

JEREMY

I just thought I'd name a hat after my son who is celebrating his birthday today.  He likes blue.  H.B.

LAZY DAY

Just hangin' around on the front porch glider.  Taking it easy.  Yup.  Just one of those days.

SPRINGTIME FLOWER

Oh, wow!!  The colors in this picture look so Springy.  I started with yarns of pinks and blues and then switched to the lime green yarn when I ran out of the others.  Good choice.  I think it's pretty.

Monday, May 15, 2017

cherry on top

Wow.  I ran out of yellow yarn near the end of this project so I found some reddish colored yarn to complete the hat.  Looks good, I think.  It's very soft to the touch and warm enough for a spring day.

BZZZZ

Looks like a bee sitting on the shelf.  No it doesn't.  The colors remind me of a bee, though.  The yarn is very soft and lightweight and that makes for a perfect springtime hat.  No stings attached.

EMERGENCY

Not really.  The hat is just a very bright red and certainly is noticeable.  It is also warm with a very soft fluffy black knit section around the ears.  The band is variegated  red, white and black yarn for a complete look.  Topped with a black pompom, too!  go go go

PASTEL STRIPES

I made this hat from bits and pieces of yarn.  It is made for a small child and the colors are very cheer-y.  The yarn is soft to the touch and the extra layer of knit yarn at the ears will keep the young wearer very snuggly warm even in chilly late Spring.

LITTLE FLUFFER

The speckled yarn that I used to knit this hat is so soft it will make any child happy while wearing it.  I combined the very thin decorative yarn with a thicker gold colored yarn to give the hat some warmth and stability.  Oh, how soft and comfy!

BUTTERCUP

Just in time for Spring.  This bright yellow knit hat is lightweight, yet, just warm enough to stave off the morning chill.  Who can resist this colorful charmer?

The leprechaun says "Top of the morning to ye!"

double decker

Here's a two tone green hat knit with stripes in the band and tweed on top.  Another thick one which will meet the warmth requirement.  Sporty, too.

Wednesday, March 15, 2017

red speckles

I like the looks of this little red and white knit hat.  The mixture creates a tweedy look and the extra thick band will keep those little ears warm.  It's very soft, too.

Monday, March 13, 2017

tweedy greenie beanie

I have a lot of green yarn and I have been thinking up different ways to use it.  This hat has a thin white yarn woven into the head band and it gives the hat a tweedy look.  Extra thickness at the ears will keep a child's head warm.  It's comfy, too.

donuts

No, I don't think the hat could be mistaken for a donut but I wanted to take a picture of this hat with the donut bag that was carefully saved from last summer's visit to the state fair.  Both are yummy!!

SLEEPYTIME

I think it's the setting that makes me think of sleepy time.  The plush comforter in the picture is velvet-y on one side and fluffy on the other.  The color combination of the yarns in the hat are some of my favorites--dark red and forest green.  Time for a nap.

SCRAPPY TWO

This hat was made in the exact same way as Scrappy (yesterday's hat) but using a pretty green for the base color instead of burgundy.  Odds and ends and little bits of yarn were knit together to create the random, yet colorful, band around the ear area.  Time to play outside!!

SCRAPPY

I knit this hat from scraps of yarns.  Actually, they were more like bits and pieces.  Some were very short and hardly worth saving but I did and the hat turned out just fine.  It's also a very warm hat with lots of protection for the ears.  It looks like it survived the battle of the yarn bits quite nicely.

WINE BERRY

I really like the color of this hat.  It is a dark red burgundy color.  Extra thick for warmth and great protection for the ears.  And, just the right color.

YIPES STRIPES

Forest green and aqua yarns knit together to make this nice stripe-y hat.  It's warm.  mmmmm!
